Observations on the Hudson River as it passes through New York City. The section of the Hudson which passes through New York is historically known as the North River, called this by the Dutch to distinguish it from the Delaware River, which they knew as the South River. This stretch of the Hudson is still often referred to as the North River by local mariners today. All photos copyright Daniel Katzive unless otherwise attributed. The region has moved from storm to storm, with long periods of rain interrupted by occasional sunny days. This past weekend was particularly torrential, causing severe flooding on land and leading to combined sewer overflows in the area’s waterways. With water quality taking a hit, the swim portion of the New York City Triathlon was cancelled, as it was in 2021. The race had been pushed back to October from July this year, which reduces the risk of extreme heat impacting the runners and bike segments but increases risks of tropical storm rainfall events knocking out the swim. Meanwhile, river traffic has remained heavy.
