Observations on the Hudson River as it passes through New York City. The section of the Hudson which passes through New York is historically known as the North River, called this by the Dutch to distinguish it from the Delaware River, which they knew as the South River. A cargo of Spanish gypsum moved up the North River Wednesday aboard the Swiss-flagged 650-foot bulk ship Lausanne. They were heading for the wallboard plant in Buchanan, NY. As usual, a pair of Moran tugs came up the river ahead of time to help with docking at the factory. Lausanne is one of only about a dozen ocean-going Swiss-flagged ships, all of which are bulkers. Her homeport is Basel but she would be unable to ever have visited that inland facility which is serviced by inland vessels.
