Observations on the Hudson River as it passes through New York City. The section of the Hudson which passes through New York is historically known as the North River, called this by the Dutch to distinguish it from the Delaware River, which they knew as the South River. Hardly a week has gone by this winter without a gale warning in NY Harbor and, as a result, we are seeing more variety of vessels visiting the sheltered North River than usual, albeit in less than ideal conditions for photography. Wednesday morning has brought the hopper dredge Ellis Island and her tug Douglas B Mackie to anchor off Edgewater. They have been working off Fire Island and we last saw this combination anchored here during a winter storm back in January.
