Observations on the Hudson River as it passes through New York City. The section of the Hudson which passes through New York is historically known as the North River, called this by the Dutch to distinguish it from the Delaware River, which they knew as the South River. FROM THE ARCHIVES: Exactly a year ago, on March 5 2025, I was hanging out with some local tabloid reporters outside the Manhattan Cruise Terminal as Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem boarded the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma at Pier 88 where she hosted a meeting with federal law enforcement officials on the ship’s enclosed hangar deck. As far as I was able to determine, the 270-foot cutter, which we don’t normally see on the North River, was brought down from Newport for the sole purpose of hosting the meeting. A year to the day after this meeting, Noem is out, the first cabinet-level official to leave the administration.
