Lights, camera, action

Stasinos Marine’s James Charles, a 2,000 HP tug built in 1970 and not to be confused with the company’s Charles James tug, was at North River Pier 94 Wednesday pulling the crane barge that has been there for over a year. The Sunset Studios sound stages and production facilities constructed on the pier opened in January but workers are still putting the finishing touches on the exterior spaces along the north and west exposures which will be open to the public.

There will be lots of new good jobs there but this is yet another pier permanently lost to maritime use. Next door to the south sits Pier 92, structurally condemned and then Pier 90, also mostly closed down for structural reasons. Long-term plans call for tearing down Pier 90 and rebuilding Pier 92 with a blue highway access point on the north side.
