Nicole Reinauer/RTC 135 passing Fort Lee

The Nicole Reinauer/RTC 135 ATB came up the North River Saturday morning. With the barge 460-feet long and the tug 119 feet, this is one of the biggest ATBs we see going up river regularly, or perhaps the biggest. This combination often only goes up as far as Newburgh, which was their initial destination on Saturday, but on Monday they were continuing on to Albany.

  • Lion Thursday

Centerline Logistics units with their lion logo were busy moving oil product up the North River from a Carteret terminal to distribution points up north on Thursday. William F Fallon Jr and barge Flaco came through in the morning, Albany-bound, followed by Adeline Marie with Marc N bound for Newburgh in the afternoon that day. By Sunday, both are back in NY Harbor, with William anchored on the North River off the Soldiers and Sailors monument.

  • A visit from the Cutter Oak

Two days after our local coastal buoy tender Katherine Walker travelled north of the GWB to attend to some errant buoys, the much larger 225-foot seagoing tender Oak passed through heading upriver. Oak is based in Newport RI and is the “Maine Responder,” spending most of her time along the rocky shores of that state. The cutter may be heading up to join ice breaking operations up north. Warmed moist air moved in above the cold water in New York City on Friday, keeping a layer of fog over the river.

  • Stopping by

The big Kirby Cape Henry/DBL 103 ATB came up the North River as winds picked up Thursday. The barge looked loaded but they weren’t continuing north with the cargo, just anchored for a while off Edgewater before returning to the Kills.

  • Keeper of the Harbor

Katherine Walker, the Keeper of New York Harbor, was heading north up the North River on Wednesday afternoon. A lot of buoys have been knocked off station by the recent ice flows and Katherine probably had her work cut out for her. For some reason she does not seem to be running AIS so it is not clear how far up she went.

  • Peekskill-bound

Dann Marine’s Gulf Coast has not, I believe, been based in NY Harbor for a few years, but this winter has been around and doing Hudson River work. On Tuesday, GC came up the North River with Vane Barge DS-43 heading for the small products terminal in Peekskill. They passed the anchored Curtis Reinauer/RTC 82 ATB off North Bergen.

    At the coffer dam

Weeks Marine’s tug Robert was maneuvering barges at the Gateway Tunnel coffer dam site off Pier 66 on Monday. The project is reinforcing the riverbed at this spot so that the Gateway rail tunnel will be able to pass underneath.

  • Less common birds

Ice has largely cleared from the shores of the North River along the West Side this morning, but for whatever reason some birds we don’t often see here have moved in with a bufflehead and a gadwall fishing off Riverside Park South. Back to boats tomorrow.

  • Moving through ice

Stephen Reinauer/RTC 61 moved through floating ice on the North River Thursday. The barge had a fuel cargo bound for a terminal in Albany. Stephen was back in New York Harbor before midnight Saturday night.

Below the cliffs, amidst the ice

The Vane Brothers tug Philadelphia and barge DS 601 have spent the past few days anchored amid the ice flows on the North River. In the photo, they are sitting below the cliffs of the Bergen Hill in North Bergen on Wednesday.
