Susan Rose/RCM 250 passed up the North River Wednesday en route to anchorage off Yonkers.
Reinauer’s Josephine anchored further south off Edgewater
William F Fallon Jr remained anchored further south with the barge Long Island.
Stasinos’s newest tug Maureen Regina, the former DonJon tug Emily Ann, passed by with a hopper heading for Kingston on the hip, barely visible from the New York shoreline.
The diminutive tug Rae returned from a trip up to Verplanck
The even smaller Kenny G was heading for the North River Shipyard in Nyack with what might be part of the Greenpoint ferry dock on a barge.
George Holland was filling in for Buchanan12 on the Greenville to Clinton Point run, with B12 currently paying a visit to the Caddell Dry Dock yard.
The small bunkering tanker Chandra B headed up to the 125th Street piers after visiting customers in Chelsea Piers and Pier 82. They were probably delivering diesel to the Bay Lander ship permanently docked there as a restaurant.
A 45’ NYPD launch also travelled upriver
Yonker Police’s Marine Unit travelled down river beyond their usual jurisdiction.
The Army Corp’s Moritz was patrolling the river Wednesday as well.

  • Tuesday July 9–furnace

    Tuesday July 9–furnace
The asphalt tanker Star River passed up the North River early Tuesday en route to Albany, having previously discharged cargo at Sprague’s Port Morris Bronx terminal and in Providence. The tanker appears to have loaded a refined products cargo (perhaps asphalt) in Aliaga, Turkey. At nearly 600’ in length and over 36,000 deadweight tons Star River is much bigger than most of the foreign flag tankers we see on the river occasionally.
Heading the other way was NY State Marine Highway Transportation’s Maddie K with stone hoppers loaded in Hudson, NY with rock probably quarried there. They were heading for the asphalt plant dock in Stamford, Connecticut.
The Kristy Ann/RTC 80 ATB were heading north for Albany with a products cargo.
Saint Emilion returned from Albany with A87 and anchored in Gravesend Bay.
CMT’s Erin Elizabeth was returning to base with light hoppers.

  • Monday July 8–hot town

    Monday July 8–hot town
Genesis Vision made an early departure from their anchorage off Riverdale with light tank barge GM 6508. They passed down the North River to Bayonne IMTT where they were presumably loading a new cargo.
Kimberly Poling came through early as well, heading north with the loaded Edwin A Poling barge.
Oddly, the barge was flying a yellow flag in place of the usual red hazardous cargo pennant. The significance of a yellow flag is unclear, and perhaps the red flag had simply been bleached somehow.
The flag certainly looked more clearly red in the past.
Poling colleagues on the Kristin Poling were heading the other way with Eva Leigh Cutler after discharging cargo in Albany
Coral Coast had a cement cargo from Ravenna heading for College Point, Queens.
FDNY’s 343 boat headed up to the top of the North River, past the bridge. They met Westchester County Police’s boat up there, down from Tarrytown.
An NYPD launch also headed up there, though scanner traffic did not indicate any incidents.
As did the New Jersey State Police.
And the NY State Dept of Environmental Conservation Police, seen here on their way back to the harbor.
DonJon’s J. Arnold Witte was working the DSNY transfer station at Pier 99.

  • June 26–mid-week storm

    June 26–mid-week storm
Dann’s Chesapeake Coast brought the Chesapeake barge up from the bay to North River anchorage ahead of violent thunder storms Wednesday evening. Saint Emilion also dropped anchor with A87 on the way back from Albany.
Captain Dann came up from the harbor to babysit A87 through the storm while the Saint visited the facilities on the KvK and perhaps refueled in Newark. This was the first time we have seen the Captain on NRN in over two years.
By sunrise, the Saint was back in the notch, though by midday they had made up alongside.
And then rigged for towing astern before heading for the harbor at midday and out through the Narrows and to sea for a rare trip out of town. By late afternoon they were moving down the Jersey Shore.
Chesapeake also dropped out of the notch and took up position on the hip.
Dann colleagues aboard Zeus passed them a bit later on with a cement cargo from Ravenna heading for the harbor.
Dann’s East Coast was coming the other way with a sugar cargo from Florida heading for Yonkers on the Sugar Express barge.
Vane’s Bohemia also spent Wednesday night anchored further north before leaving Thursday morning.
Royal Wagenborg cargo ship Virginiaborg came through early Wednesday with a Swedish wood pulp cargo heading for Albany and paper mills up north.
The Cape Hatteras/DBL 81 ATB returned from the Buckeye Rensselaer terminal on Wednesday after a relatively rare run up the Hudson for a Kirby ATB and headed for Buckeye Port Reading.

  • Late June: heat and wind

    Late June: heat and wind
Centerline’s Adeline Marie ATB came up the North River to anchor as extreme heat gave way to gale conditions Monday evening. Adeline has not been seen on NRN since last July and has been working in the Gulf as recently as May. By Tuesday afternoon they had left town, heading back to the Gulf of Mexico
The cargo ship Aralia was heading for sea and her next port of call in Baltimore Tuesday after delivering steel beams to the Port of Coeymans which were ultimately destined for a pedestrian bridge in Buffalo. The visible deck cargo is likely heading for another port in the U.S.

  • Mid-June update—heat wave

    Mid-June update—heat wave
The B. Franklin Reinauer/RTC 81 ATB brought a cargo up the North River early Wednesday, heading for Newburgh ahead of the heat.
It was properly hot and hazy by the time American Petroleum’s small tug came up the North River with a proportionally small tank barge, probably heading for a terminal with shallow draft constraints. They passed the much larger Kristin Poling with the Eva Leigh Cutler parking at anchorage off West New York.
Jordan Rose was spending time on the North River, moving between anchorages off Yonkers and in the Upper Bay locked in with the RCM 252 tank barge.
Marilyn George returned to the harbor with the Noelle Cutler barge Monday.
The 65’ Coast Guard harbor tug Hawser headed up the North River to the Coast Guard’s Edgewater mooring for the evening, passing a J80 running with spinnaker
Survey work for the Gateway Tunnel off the heliport and the remains of Pier 68 continued this week, but with a smaller vessel apparently taking samples from the riverbed rather than drilling.
Warm weather means bodies tend to rise to the surface, making this a somewhat busy time of year for marine responders. A decease man was recovered at the Boat Basin.
Marine 1’s Alpha boat responded initially, along with land-based Rescue 1 and local companies…
But with the victim clearly deceased it became a job for Harbor and the NYPD’s ESU responding from land.
Silver Shadow arrived at Pier 88 with help from Moran Towing.
Vane’s Fort Schuyler waited at Pier 90 while Carnival Venezia loaded fuel from a barge across the slip.
A cormorant dried off Wednesday morning.

  • June 6-10–Summer cruising

    June 6-10–Summer cruising
Classic Harbor Line’s Manhattan II ran sightseeing cruises out of the Dyckman Marina on Saturday, traveling down to the Statue and back around via the East and Harlem Rivers.
The famous Clearwater also visited Dyckman Street Saturday
The river cruise American Eagle began Monday at Alpine Marina and headed for Pier 81, probably without passengers, ahead of a scheduled cruise up to Albany Tuesday.
Ellen and Charles D McAllister travelled up the North River to Yonkers on Monday to help sail the Bulker Bee from the sugar plant there. Earlier in the day, these tugs assisted SUNY Maritime’s new training ship Empire State VII leaving the school’s dock for its inaugural summer training cruise. Empire headed east out the sound and did not pass Manhattan.
The Bulker Bee ship had arrived last Wednesday to deliver its cargo to Yonkers.
The State Department of Environmental Conservation police marine unit was on hand to watch the Empire State depart and later headed back through Hell Gate.
Saturday saw the cargo ship BBC Scandinavia transit the North River en route to the Port of Albany with a large piece of machinery as deck cargo.
Buchanan12 brought 9 empty hoppers back up to Clinton Point.
Centerline’s Hawsepiper returned from its inaugural run up the Hudson to Albany with the barge Flaco and headed for the KvK after anchoring for a few days south of the bridge. Flaco is normally paired with C.F. Campbell but that tug appears to be on the hard in Bayonne for service. It’s relatively unusual for Centerline tugs to make runs upstate like this.
Boston Marine’s Quenames returned from Newburgh with the New England 29 barge on Saturday.
Dace Reinauer spent some time anchored off 96th Street with the small RTC 61 barge.

  • Wednesday June 5–planned and unplanned swimming

Wednesday June 5–planned and unplanned swimming
North River water temperatures breached 70 farenheit this week, and the season of escorted swimmers circling Manhattan has kicked off. A pair of swimmers came through Wednesday, moving south with the ebb tide.
An unplanned swim brought Marine 1’s alpha boat up the North River at speed after someone was reported to have fallen into the water off the rocks in Riverside Park above 96th Street.
    Land-based units also responded.
The New Jersey Fireboat Task Force seems to have dispatched a boat from Hoboken as well, but they arrived well after the person was out of the water.
Saint Emilion headed for anchorage off Yonkers with the A87 barge.
Centerline tug Hawsepiper made its North River debut, never before seen by NRN, after being acquired by Centerline in 2022. Piper was heading north with a cargo loaded in Carteret on the barge Flaco. Flaco, whose naming proceeded the fame of the similarly named owl, has been previously seen on the North River with the tug C.F. Campbell. Campbell is now on the hard at Bayonne Shipyard for service, as document by the Tugster blog on Tuesday.
The Coast Guard cutter Razorbill, an 87’ patrol boat based in Gulf Port, Mississippi, is visiting New York City and docked at Pier 86 across from the Intrepid.
    Another angle on the Razorbill.
Survey work for the Gateway Tunnel continues. This week the small tug Little C is off the heliport with a spud barge and a drilling rig, taking samples and requesting passing vessels to observe a slow bell.

  • Tuesday June 4–heading for sea

    Tuesday June 4–heading for sea
A Moran tug running light down the North River usually means a bulk ship is arriving or leaving from the dock at the wallboard plant in Buchanan. Mary Turecamo came south Tuesday morning…
And sure enough was followed shortly by the 650’ long bulk ship Feng Ze Hai, heading to sea after discharging gypsum from Garrucha, Spain at the plant.
As usual, a second Moran tug was also involved, and returned to the harbor following the bulker.
The sugar barge Knot Refined was also heading for sea after unloading in Westchester, with Dann’s Ruby Coast towing astern.
Knot Refined entered service a little over two years ago and was named (knamed?) in an employee contest.
Norfolk Towing’s Robert Burton handled the assist from the dock in Yonkers, not the usual company we see on that job. They headed back to the harbor ahead of the Ruby Coast.
Genesis Glory and GM 11105 headed to anchorage in the Upper Bay after spending a few days parked in the North River off North Bergen.
Marilyn George was heading for Albany with a products cargo on the Noelle Cutler barge.
The NYC DEP’s water quality boat the Osprey was on the North River taking samples.
New York Outrigger’s canoes headed for their Pier 96 base well ahead of the June sunset.
