Catch my drift
The Army Corps of Engineers drift collection vessel (DCV) Hayward came up the North River Saturday morning, on patrol for hazards to navigation. Hayward passed the cottages of Edgewater Colony, a cooperative housing development which is the only place in New Jersey where detached single-family homes sit directly on the Hudson River. On Tuesday morning,…

Survey says!
The Army Corps of Engineers survey vessel Dobrin was on the North River quite a bit in late July. As the screen shot from MarineTraffic shows, they were doing survey work north of the GW Bridge. Dobrin was also spotted retrieving a hazard from the North River off Hudson Yards during that period.

The fleet is back, but no flat top
The Fleet Week parade of ships was a somewhat more subdued affair this year relative to the recent past, perhaps a reflection of a navy that has been very busy offshore. There was no flattop LHD this year, but we did get Amphibious Transport Dock USS New York and Landing Ship Dock USS Oak Hill.…

Punching the clock
The Army Corps of Engineers driftwood collection vessel Gelberman exited the North River after a patrol on Wednesday. Gelberman was passing the office towers and Colgate Clock of Paulus Hook in Jersey City, the former site of Colgate-Palmolive’s HQ and factory complex until the 1980s. Container cranes in Bayonne are visible in the distance.

A Reinauer ATB was anchored south of the bridge on the right and the Edgewater ferry was also visible southbound on the left. Inbound truck traffic was heavy on the upper level of the bridge, and the old convent is…

At work in the fog
Fog moved over the North River Thursday as temperatures warmed up. A pair of Army Corps of Engineers boats worked to corral a piece of lumber in the afternoon, helping keep the river clear of hazards to navigation in poor visibility.

Hello old friend
The Army Corps of Engineers workboat Hayward was back on the North River this week, the first time I have seen her in two years. Hayward was once an almost daily presence, collecting hazards to navigation with her big crane. In past years, I have also seen her carrying the flag in Fleet Week parades,…

Wednesday Feb 28–quiet before the storm

Observed commercial traffic was nil on Wednesday on the North River and anchorages were empty south of Yonkers. Despite gale warnings going into effect a few ATBs were riding it out in the Upper Bay rather than coming up to the calmer waters of the river. By sundown winds were already gusting at over 20…
