Navy above
A Navy MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter made several loops up the North River last week on what was presumably a training flight originating somewhere in South Jersey. The MH-60S is a multi-mission navy helicopter based on the same platform as the Army’s Black Hawk. Monday is the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy.

Valentine’s Day—Marine Traffic
The North River was busy on Wednesday, with Tuesday’s snow storm perhaps having deferred some activity. The Marines were also moving up the Hudson River flight corridor, with a number of helicopters heading north. Skies were clear but temperatures dropped below freezing and winds remained elevated.

Comings and goings
It has been a relatively quiet start to heating season as traffic on the North River has been light and temperatures have begun to climb again. The week passed with the typical ebb and flow of tugs and barges.

Drying out
North River traffic has remained heavy as we move into October and the rains of September recede over the stern. A large number of pleasure craft are also traversing the river, probably many in transit to their winter boatyards as the season draws to a close.

The first week of September following Labor Day marks the traditional and meteorological start of autumn. After the weird air quality conditions of the work week, the weekend was refreshingly normal. Familiar tugs and barges went about their usual business, with oil products moving north and stone coming south, and empties moving in the opposite direction.
