Back to Yonkers
The Dann Marine tug East Coast headed up the North River running light, heading back to the Yonkers sugar refinery to rejoin a barge left there as the tug visited Bayonne, probably to refuel. The Yonkers plant is scheduled to close by the end of this year but seems to still be receiving regular deliveries…

Sugar substitute
Balsa 89 came up the North River last week heading for the Port of Coeymans. Usually when we see these small Dowa Line bulkers on the river they are heading for Yonkers with sugar cargos, but this time Balsa 89 went straight through to Coeymans. Her port of origin was Jamaica and I don’t have…

Working Westchester
Waterfronts in Westchester were working Wednesday. A pair of Moran tugs returned to the harbor in the morning after assisting a bulk ship loaded with Spanish gypsum docking at the wallboard plant in Buchanan, NY. In the first photo, Topaz Coast is also visible with a dry bulk barge, holding position off Edgewater and waiting…

A little more sugar
Dann Marine’s Topaz Coast had the dry bulk barge Montville on the wire heading for sea Tuesday evening after discharging sugar at the Yonkers refinery. This cargo appears to have come up from the Gulf coast rather than Florida and the tow was heading back there now. Dann Ocean’s Captain Dann ran light up to…

Farewell Domino
A Panama-flagged bulk ship passed the Dyckman Street Marina on Wednesday evening, heading for sea after discharging a cargo of Dominican sugar in Yonkers. This week brought sad news that the 100-year old plant would shut down by the end of this year, ending the tenure of one of the few remaining marine highway users…

Captain D lends a hand
Captain D, a 2,400 HP Norfolk Towing tug which I don’t think we’ve seen before on the North River, came by Wednesday morning running light returning from a trip up to the Yonkers sugar refinery. I believe they were helping a barge dock at the plant. The barge had likely been waiting at anchor for…

Paying the tariff
Balsa 91, a compact 350-foot Panama-flagged bulk ship, arrived on the North River Wednesday with a cargo of raw sugar from Dominican Republic heading for the refinery in Yonkers. With the bulker having left DR after April 5, this may be the first or one of the first foreign cargos to arrive on the river…

Born in the 60s
Ellen McAllister, launched in 1967, came down the North River Monday running light and passing the Palisades Hospital in North Bergen. Ellen was returning to the harbor after helping to dock a bulk ship which had arrived at the Yonkers sugar house with a cargo of raw sugar from the Dominican Republic just before sunrise.

Sugar Express running local
A cargo of Florida sugar moved up the North River towards Yonkers Wednesday on the Sugar Express barge with the East Coast tug pushing. The Express was moving slowly against a ripping ebb tide bolstered by melting ice up north. But there was probably no rush, as the bulk ship which arrived at the plant…

Returning to the front
Coast Guard Cutter Hawser was heading back to ice breaking operations up north after some time at her Bayonne base. Both Hawser and the other 65-foot harbor tug based in Bayonne have been busy keeping the channel and terminal piers clear of ice for barges this winter, along with the larger 140-foot ice breakers. Albany…

Sweet Monday

A cargo of sugar arrived on the North River from the Dominican Republic just after sunrise on Monday morning aboard the Panama-flagged bulker Century Melody. They were heading for the refinery in Yonkers. The plant there has been operating for over 100 years and also receives domestic sugar deliveries via U.S. flagged barges.
