Work day

The Army Corps of Engineers drift collection vessel Hayward came up the North River on Sunday, traveling as far as the Upper West Side before looping back to the harbor. The ship is primarily charged with keeping local waterways clear of hazards to navigation but had the additional role of carrying the flag at the head of the July 4 parade of ships. Hayward has been a familiar sight around New York Harbor going back to the 1970s but received a major upgrade in dry dock a few years ago.
