Observations on the Hudson River as it passes through New York City. The section of the Hudson which passes through New York is historically known as the North River, called this by the Dutch to distinguish it from the Delaware River, which they knew as the South River. State of Maine

NOT THE NORTH RIVER: A visit to coastal Maine found some vessels similar to occasional visitors to the North River. The Maine Maritime Academy’s training ship State of Maine was in residence at the school’s dock in Castine. The ship is a sister to our local SUNY Maritime vessel the Empire State and was in New York Harbor at the mouth of the North River for this summer’s Independence Day celebrations. Nearby, the Coast Guard station at Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island hosts a pair of 47-foot motor lifeboats, which I have not seen on the North River, but also a more familiar 65-foot small harbor tug Bridle, similar to the cutters Wire, Hawser, and Line who we do see on the North River and the Bollard who I ran into in Montauk last summer, as well as a 29-foot response boat.
