FDNY Fireboat Three Forty Three was one of the leaders of the Sail4th 250 tall ship parade on Independence Day this year. The Marine 1 vessel, which returned from a period in dry dock at Brooklyn Navy Yard just in time to participate in the festivities, is named for the number of FDNY firefighters who died on 9/11, though many more than that have subsequently succumbed to related illnesses. The 343 spent September 11 morning this year on ceremonial duty off lower Manhattan. But her sister ship, Marine 9’s Firefighter II based on State Island, had an active 24 hours, responding on Thursday to an explosion and fire at the Clean Water of NY barge cleaning facility in Mariner’s Harbor.
