The Coast Guard cutter William Chadwick, a 154-foot Fast Response Cutter based in Boston, came up the North River on Wednesday morning after spending the night at the Bayonne base. The cutter travelled as far north up the Hudson as West Point before returning, passing us again on the way out around 4pm.
The FRCs primarily operate offshore and we do not often see them on the Hudson, although the Chadwick has been on the East River in recent years for UN and other special event security operations. We did see another of the Boston FRC’s, the John Patterson, make almost the exact same trip upriver in November 2024 and I assume this is probably a training and familiarization trip. I do not know if it’s a coincidence that the timing is perfect for viewing the autumn colors.
Chadwick headed up through Hell Gate by sundown Wednesday and was Boston-bound on the Sound before dropping off terrestrial AIS.
