• No room at the inn

After an overnight lull, winds were back above 30 knots Saturday morning and North River anchorages were full, with tanker barge/tug combinations stretched out about a half mile apart from the Boat Basin north, with another two pairs past the bridge and one off Yonkers.

  • Whitecaps

Winds near 30 knots came straight up the North River from the southwest Friday morning, driving the rain and putting whitecaps on the water as the big Barney Turecamo/Georgia ATB showed her stern to Manhattan at the beginning of the flood tide. Barney/Georgia was one of several combinations which came up from the bay to anchor on the river overnight.

  • Gypsum delivery

A cargo of Spanish gypsum moved up the North River Wednesday aboard the Swiss-flagged 650-foot bulk ship Lausanne. They were heading for the wallboard plant in Buchanan, NY. As usual, a pair of Moran tugs came up the river ahead of time to help with docking at the factory. Lausanne is one of only about a dozen ocean-going Swiss-flagged ships, all of which are bulkers. Her homeport is Basel but she would be unable to ever have visited that inland facility which is serviced by inland vessels.

  • Joker’s wild

Hays Tug Joker came down the North River Tuesday morning with a high-sided hopper loaded with stone, coming down from the quarry dock in Hudson, NY. Joker seems to be doing a fair amount of Hudson River work this year. By Wednesday morning, Joker was already heading back north up the river.

  • Parallel Parking

It has been a busy start to the week in the North River anchorages. Monday morning found three tugs and tanker barges anchored. Saint Emilion with Barge A87 and Genesis Glory with barge GM 11105 were parked about a half mile apart off Morningside Heights. The Saint was pausing for a few hours on the way back to the harbor from an Albany run, while Glory came up for a rest after returning from New Haven and stayed until Tuesday morning. A bit further north was Mt. Saint Elias who had also spent Sunday on the river and then headed for the Bayridge flats Monday afternoon. By Tuesday evening, Gracie M. Reinauer had dropped anchor off Grant’s Tomb on the way back from Newburgh.

  • Flaco passing through

Centerline Logistics tug Hawsepiper brought the barge Flaco down the North River Monday morning, coming back from a delivery at a products terminal near Newburgh. They passed the Port Imperial ferry terminal and, visible on the top the Bergen Hill, the historic Weehawken water tank built in 1883. Hawsepiper headed directly for the Bayway Terminal on the Arthur Kill, with Flaco presumably ready to load its next cargo.

  • Dive barge heading north

Tug Michael Miller of Miller’s Launch brought a Walker Diving spud barge north up the river in early November.

  • South for the winter

This Hughes 31 came down the North River on October 21. The owner had advertised on Facebook a few months earlier for crew leaving from Canada and aiming to be in BVI by January. This was probably among the last vessels to go through the Champlain Canal before it closed for the season. After a night anchored without services in what would have been the mooring field of the 79th Street Boat Basin if the marina were still open, he headed south. Hope his journey has been smooth so far.

  • Picking up scrap

    Picking up scrap

Strategic Spirit, a 610–foot Singapore flagged bulk ship came up the North River Wednesday morning. They were heading for the Sims Metal dock in Albany where they arrived Thursday afternoon and will presumably load scrap for export overseas. In the photo, they pass the Curtis Reinauer/RTC 82 ATB anchored off North Bergen.

  • Back to the harbor

Dann Ocean Towing’s Allie B returned to the harbor Tuesday after a run up to Albany with the Double Skin 43 barge, passing an anchored Reinauer ATB off 72nd Street.
