Cement Delivery
Dann’s Treasure Coast brought a loaded cement barge down from the Holcim cement plant in Ravenna, NY on Monday. They passed the Haggerty Girls/RTC 107 ATB anchored off Edgewater and were heading for the Holcim cement distribution terminal in College Point, Queens, at the mouth of Flushing Creek. The GWB’s Veterans Day flag is visible on bridge’s west tower. On Wednesday morning, they were headed back in the other direction with the barge light and made up heads/tails on the hip.

The newly commissioned USS John Basilone left Pier 88 Tuesday morning and headed for her new homeport of Norfolk. Janice Ann makes a quick visit

The Janice Ann Reinauer/RTC 103 combination caught the morning light as they made a wide turn with the ebb tide off North Bergen Monday morning. The ATB had made a brief detour up the North River on the way back from New Haven before turning and heading for the Kills and, probably, a new cargo to load. If you look closely, you can see a bit of the American flag flying on the GWB’s western tower for Veterans Day.

Birds of a feather

It’s not common to see two DEP sludge tankers on the North River at the same time. On any particular day, we usually see one of the fleet of five tankers servicing the North River plant. But on Wednesday, the Hunts Point tanker was arriving just as the Red Hook was leaving with a cargo of sludge for dewatering on Wards Island. The coincidence provides a good opportunity to see the design differences between the Hunts Point, one of thee tankers built in 2014, and the Red Hook, built in 2008.

Crane Delivery

Dann Marine’s Gulf Coast, I believe based on the Delaware River and not seen recently seen on the North River, came up from Philly with Weeks Crane 533 on the wire on Wednesday. Haugland’s Miss Madeline joined the tow in New York Harbor and the trio continued up north to the Hudson, NY area on unknown business.
UPDATE: As per Hudson River photographer Glenn Raymo, they were heading to Hudson to lift two transformers onto trucks there. The transformers are visible on the deck of the barge.

Coast Guard Drive-By

Coast Guard Cutter John Patterson, one of the six new Fast Response Cutters based in Boston, made a trip up the Hudson this week. They came up the Jersey coast, travelled upriver as far as about West Point, and then headed back out, leaving town via Hell Gate and Long Island Sound before calling on New London CT. In the photo, they are passing the large flag in Edgewater, NJ and the cement ship SSI Magnificent.

Cement delivery from Turkey

On Wednesday, the 580-foot bulk ship SSI Magnificent came up the North River with a cargo of cement from Turkey. They were heading for the cement terminal in Cementon, NY in the Town of Catskill, a bit south of Albany, after first stopping for a few days to partially discharge cargo at the terminal in Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Extra help

Norfolk Tug’s George Holland occasionally fills in for or augments the daily work of Buchanan12 bringing crushed stone down from the Clinton Point quarry south of Poughkeepsie to New York Harbor. On Wednesday, both tugs were working this route, with George bringing stone down overnight and passing B12 on the North River on the way back up with empties.

Boston heads for Newburgh

Boston Marine Towing’s Pinuccia was back on the North River Saturday, heading for Newburgh’s Global Terminal with a products cargo loaded on tank barge New York 30. They were passing Port Imperial just after noon. Boston’s two tugs have been seen on the river quite a bit as we move into heating oil season, but this weekend the other tug Quenames was elsewhere on a run up to Providence.
