Just stopping by

Among the familiar ATBs and tug/barge pairs getting out of the wind in the North River anchorages was one not seen in a while. Dann’s Calusa coast seems to normally work out of Baltimore but was anchored off Edgewater this week with a tank barge, possibly having ducked in on the way back from a…

Moving fuel to the cold north
Less than 24 hours after returning from up North, Kimberly Poling was Albany-bound again with a fuel cargo on tank barge Noelle Cutler loaded in Carteret overnight. In the photo she is passing the Bulls Ferry condos and the West New York sewage treatment plant, with JFK Boulevard visible on top of the cliffs.

Winter fuel
Centerline Tug HMS Liberty stemmed off North River Pier 97 on Saturday afternoon, waiting to deliver a fuel barge to the Con Ed Pier 98 dock. Backup fuel oil is stored on barges here for the nearby 59th Street Steam Plant, which mainly burns natural gas but sometimes can use number 4 oil during periods…

In from out of town
Genesis Valiant arrived in New York Harbor on Saturday with tanker barge GM 6507 on the wire and headed up the North River to anchor off Riverdale. The pair were arriving from Baltimore via the C&D Canal and the Delaware River. We last saw these two anchoring on the river in May of 2023. At…

Barge in
Kimberly Turecamo brought the Moran tank barge Connecticut up the North River on the hip to spend some time at anchorage on Thursday. We see Kimberly sometimes heading up for assist jobs in Buchanan but have not seen her on the river with a barge before as far as I can remember.

Small but strong
American Petroleum’s towboat Diane B returned to the harbor Tuesday morning with the barge James Joseph. We only see this tug occasionally on the North River and with only about 270 feet of combined length this is probably the smallest tank barge/tug pairing working the lower Hudson. They were returning from the small fuel terminal…

Watching the traffic
The big Reinauer Twins / RTC 104 ATB spent some time anchored in the rain on the North River off Guttenberg last week, watching passing traffic. The smaller Josephine / RTC 83 combination came by Wednesday, heading north with a cargo. Later, Kristin Poling with light barge Eva Leigh Cutler headed for an anchorage further…

Wind against tide

A 20-knot southwest wind was blowing straight up the North River on Thursday morning, creating some chop as it ran against the ebb tide. Cape Canaveral / DBL 101 left anchorage and headed for the Upper Bay.

Under the cliffs
Timothy Reinauer / RTC 84 had a nice spot to anchor heading into the weekend, seen Friday below the Palisades off Englewood Cliffs with Rockefeller Lookout visible above.

Quick turns

Avoiding wind

Road test?
On Wednesday afternoon at slack tide, Genesis Energy’s Spirit brought barge GM 11105 up the North River as far as Guttenberg. They were shadowed by Genesis Glory, which is the tug we normally see paired with this barge. Spirit maneuvered the barge around and headed back for the harbor, still shadowed by Glory. Don’t know…

Braving the wind
The collection of tug/barges sheltering from the wind on the North River began to break up Saturday afternoon, with two loaded Vane barges brought to their product destinations. Meanwhile, Reinauer Transportation was busy moving product north on the Hudson.

No room at the inn
After an overnight lull, winds were back above 30 knots Saturday morning and North River anchorages were full, with tanker barge/tug combinations stretched out about a half mile apart from the Boat Basin north, with another two pairs past the bridge and one off Yonkers.

Whitecaps
Winds near 30 knots came straight up the North River from the southwest Friday morning, driving the rain and putting whitecaps on the water as the big Barney Turecamo/Georgia ATB showed her stern to Manhattan at the beginning of the flood tide. Barney/Georgia was one of several combinations which came up from the bay to…
