Thursday Jan 18–cold running
A return from warmer climes found the North River cold but not yet icy. Traffic was light and anchorages were empty south of Yonkers.

January 4 2024–weather coming
Thursday started mild but by afternoon winds were gusting above 25 knots ahead of a winter storm coming this weekend. After a very quiet Wednesday, North River traffic picked up Thursday though still was below Tuesday’s heavy post-holiday volumes.

Fog then sun
Warm air moved over the cool North River Wednesday morning, producing a layer of fog which quickly burned off. The city got hot, and winds picked up in the afternoon, making for great October sailing. Midweek traffic was light.

The first week of September following Labor Day marks the traditional and meteorological start of autumn. Summer visitors
The North River has been seeing fairly heavy commercial traffic as we head into August, with sugar, cement, oil products, gypsum, stone, waste paper and scrap all on the move. Weather has been surprisingly cool with great wind for sailors and minimal rain after a wet July.

Stormy weekend
Commercial traffic was very light over the second weekend of July, while intermittent storms kept recreational boaters on their toes. Four tug/barge combinations dropped anchor in the North River, while escorted swimmers moved through Sunday evening despite periods of heavy rain.

Spring weekend
Mothers’ Day weekend passed with fairly typical traffic observations. If Poling-Cutler tugs dominated traffic during previous weekdays, the weekend was heavy with Reinauer Transportation moves. Beautiful conditions prevailed through Sunday.

Going back for more sugar
Thursday brought typical ATB and tanker barge traffic, as well as the departure of the large sugar barge Knot Refined heading back to Florida. Temperatures climbed sharply and a layer of haze covered the North River for most of the day before burning off in late afternoon.

Light rain, light traffic
Observed traffic was light on Thursday as light rain settled over the region, with temperatures still pleasant. A bulker came through from Albany, likely having loaded scrap at the Sims Metals dock up there and on the way to Newark to load more before heading overseas.

Windy Wednesday with a visitor from afar
Mid-week traffic on the River seemed light and entirely unremarkable after a more interesting start to the week, with the exception of a visiting fast ferry heading to Nyack for service. However, whipping northwest winds limited NRN observation opportunities. A bald eagle was sighted off 73rd Street but, sadly, not photographed.
