What’s in your tank?

As the fall foliage line moves down the River, heating oil stockpiles are building up north. The Poling-Cutler line has seemed particularly busy moving product this week.

Fog then sun

Warm air moved over the cool North River Wednesday morning, producing a layer of fog which quickly burned off. The city got hot, and winds picked up in the afternoon, making for great October sailing. Midweek traffic was light.

Rain, rain go away

The region has moved from storm to storm, with long periods of rain interrupted by occasional sunny days. This past weekend was particularly torrential, causing severe flooding on land and leading to combined sewer overflows in the area’s waterways. With water quality taking a hit, the swim portion of the New York City Triathlon was…

A good soaking

Stormy conditions and gale warnings put a damper on the weekend as the tail of Tropical Storm Ophelia swept over the region. As usual, the North River anchorages filled up with tug/barge combinations as crews looked to get out of the weather. By Sunday afternoon, Patrice McAllister, Jill Reinsure, Vane’s Wicomico, Lincoln Sea and Saint…

September slips by

A busy September onshore schedule has left limited time for observations and posting. Bulk ship traffic has been heavy on the North River but mostly eluding NRN photography. Harbor tugs were moving on the North River last week to assist with docking at plants up in Westchester, while tanker barges and cement transporters have dominated…

Summer visitors

The North River has been seeing fairly heavy commercial traffic as we head into August, with sugar, cement, oil products, gypsum, stone, waste paper and scrap all on the move. Weather has been surprisingly cool with great wind for sailors and minimal rain after a wet July.

Traveling light

Weekend traffic was light but a handful of tug/barge combinations remained anchored in the North River, with the Dylan Cooper ATB off Edgewater and Centerline’s Adeline Marie a bit further south Sunday, and the B. Franklin in between before heading for the Upper Bay Saturday. Centerline’s William J Fallon also anchored south of Adeline on…

Gypsum delivery

The wallboard plant in Buchanan is one of two receivers of bulk freight on the Hudson in Westchester, the other being the Yonkers Domino refinery. On Friday, a 655’ bulk ship, about as long as any vessel likely to be seen heading up the North River beyond the cruise terminal, arrived with a shipment of…

Summer traffic

Tuesday saw the North River anchorages empty out, with all but the Saint Emilion moving on. Reinauer ATBs and CMT tugs were moving product and a bulker headed upriver. There was not yet much sign of impact from flooding up north, though the DEP’s water monitoring vessel was seen on the River, perhaps also checking…

Cement dynamics

Cement usually moves south on the North River, coming down by specially designed barge from the Lafarge plant in Ravenna, New York for delivery to terminals in Bayonne, Queens and out in New England. Occasionally, though, imported cement comes north on foreign flagged bulk ships heading for Catskill, NY. The old Lehigh Cement plant there…

Working and resting

North River anchorages remain relatively crowded Sunday, but cargos were also on the move. Kimberly Poling remained anchored off Englewood Cliffs but colleagues on Evelyn Cutler and Marilyn George were moving north with cargos. Similarly, Timothy L. Reinauer and Kristy Ann were anchored south of the Bridge, while Haggerty Girls and Nicole Reinauer headed north.…

Fish on!

There is more than striped bass in the North River. On Friday morning, a regular named Louis caught a nice looking catfish with a waited hook and bunker as bate. Later, a trip off the River to the Rockaways via NYC Ferry provided an opportunity to observe activity in the Upper and Lower Bays.

Spring training

Summer-like temperatures and longer days are drawing more and more recreational traffic back to the North River. The water remains cold and provides a bit of air conditioning for those on shore, but first responders also seem to be getting more active as they prepare for a busy summer. Thursday saw an FDNY and Newark…

In transit

Helping to transit Hudson River Community Sailing J80s from Viking Boatyard in Verplanck to Pier 66 in Chelsea provided a great opportunity to observe traffic north of the North River for a change. Traffic was moderate over the weekend, with an upbound bulker and downbound tanker the most notable observations.

Fuel moves north, cement moves south

Good Friday saw limited traffic on the North River, though some barges were moving early. The Rotterdam remained at Pier 88 for a second day, preparing to sail for Holland where she will join a celebration for the 150-year anniversary of the Holland-America Line. Late in the day, the bulk ship SSI Magnificent came up…

Tuesday traffic

After a slow start to the month, Tuesday brought some notable traffic to the North River, including some overseas cargos heading upstate on foreign flagged vessels. Pier 88 was also busy as the city’s Economic Development Corporation assembled some working boats from the Harbor for what seemed to be a career day for local students.…

Light rain, light traffic

Observed traffic was light on Thursday as light rain settled over the region, with temperatures still pleasant. A bulker came through from Albany, likely having loaded scrap at the Sims Metals dock up there and on the way to Newark to load more before heading overseas.

Springing ahead

Days continue to start cold, but warm up as the sun rises, and the morning lows also have begun to trend higher. River traffic has seemed rather light, though minerals and oil products continue to move.

Working weekend

Saturday evening brought another bulker bringing Spanish gypsum up to the Buchanan wallboard plant, and Sunday saw the tanker Hanfia Lise heading back to sea after delivering a cargo of what was probably Canadian-refined oil products in Albany. Otherwise, traffic seemed light after the flurry of recent days. By the end of the weekend, all…

Buying in bulk

The dip down to freezing on Saturday was short-lived, with temperatures climbing back to just shy of 50 again on Sunday. River traffic remained moderately heavy, with the third bulker of the weekend coming through Sunday. The Reinauer Twins remained anchored off 110th Street for a third day.
