Brooklyn Break

A day away from the North River and visiting Brooklyn provided a bit of a different perspective on activity in New York Harbor. While parks and recreation have also come to dominate much of the Brooklyn waterfront, there are still pockets of commercial and industrial activity, much more so than we see along the Hudson…

Endless summer

Temperatures climbed again Tuesday, but the steady southerly winds which have been gracing us all of August this year have continued, providing some relief on the River. Commercial traffic was typical and light.

Triathalon Sunday

The annual New York City Triathalon was held Sunday, though the running and biking segments were cut in half due to the extreme heat. The swimming segment went off as planned, unlike last year when elevated bacteria caused that leg to be canceled. Swimmers entered the water off a dock at 81st Street and swam…

The Dog Days of Summer

Scorching heat prevailed Tuesday, with Monday’s storms having done little if anything to cool things down. Fortunately, decent 10+ knot winds out of the southwest provided some relief by the water. River traffic was generally familiar and typical, with one notable exception seen in the skies. The highlight of the day was to see a…

Capsized

Tuesday saw a terrible accident on the river as a small boat carrying twelve people capsized and partially sunk. Ten people were rescued by ferries according to reports, but FDNY and NYPD divers had to retrieve two. Apparently, two were brought to the hospital in serious or critical condition. There was no word on what…

The LV transfer bridge which fed the Starrett Lehigh Building was located north of Pier 66, closer to where the Pier 66 boat…

Practice makes perfect

Coast Guard Sector New York’s four 29’ response boats were back in the river Thursday, drilling similarly to what we observed almost exactly a month ago (see Drill Baby Drill). Once again, two boats had their forward machine guns mounted. FDNY’s 140’ Marine 1 fire boat was also practicing on the river (or perhaps just…

Spring at last (again)
Rainy skies in the morning gave way to a glorious afternoon with temperatures in the 70s. The fire boat William Feehan was back in the river doing what looked like recovery drills off Pier i, with a man in the water and a life ring. Later, the NYPD’s 62’ harbor launch the P.O. Harry R…

Later daylight
Daylight savings time means more opportunity to observe traffic late in the day on the river. Tuesday saw Buchanan12 pushing a float of empty hoppers at slack tide heading back up to the Tilcon quarry at Clinton Point. In the photo, the FDNY’s 27’ Marine 1a small boat passes heading downriver towards its Chelsea headquarters.…
