Summer traffic

Tuesday saw the North River anchorages empty out, with all but the Saint Emilion moving on. Reinauer ATBs and CMT tugs were moving product and a bulker headed upriver. There was not yet much sign of impact from flooding up north, though the DEP’s water monitoring vessel was seen on the River, perhaps also checking…

Input and output

The Lafarge cement plant in Ravenna, NY and the Domino Sugar refinery in Yonkers are two important users of the Hudson River marine highway. Though sugar and cement barges are not seen as frequently as the tanker barges and rock scows that are a constant presence, they do pass through quite regularly. Domino uses the…

Happy Fathers’ Day

Fathers’ Day weekend saw mostly typical traffic, with a heavy recreational component as dads took to the water Sunday in force. A large Dutch-flagged cargo ship heading north Sunday was the most notable traffic observed.

Helping hands

The work week has passed with typical North River traffic as we move into the final days of astronomical spring. The Poling-Cutler and Reinauer lines continue to move oil products north as usual, while Boston Marine seems like it might perhaps be in the ethanol delivery business as we head into summer driving season based…

Smoke on the water

Brisk winds and occasional squalls rolling through did little to clear out the layer of smoke which sat over the North River Tuesday, a product of forest fires up north in Quebec. Commercial traffic was fairly heavy, with the knot of tugs anchored in the North River breaking up leaving only The Beatrice anchored off…

Weekday dredgery

DonJon Marine’s dredging team was back at work in the Manhattan Cruise Terminal this week, perhaps adding some depth back ahead of Fleet Week later this month. Otherwise observed traffic has been fairly typical on the North River, with Reinauer and Poling-Cutler crews moving oil products north, and stone coming south from the Clinton Point…

Outdoor activity

Perfect weather brought heavy recreational activity back to the North River, with motor, wind and human power vessels very much in evidence. Commercial traffic was heavy as well, particularly on Sunday. Norwegian’s Prima spent the day on the north side of Pier 88 and the USS Coooperstown remained tied up on the south side after…

Going back for more sugar

Thursday brought typical ATB and tanker barge traffic, as well as the departure of the large sugar barge Knot Refined heading back to Florida. Temperatures climbed sharply and a layer of haze covered the North River for most of the day before burning off in late afternoon.

Power move

Thursday afternoon saw the Dutch flagged cargo ship Floretgracht come down the North River from Albany on the way out to sea. The vessel had arrived earlier in the week from Northern Europe carrying steel cable spools according to the Port of Albany’s Twitter feed. The spools are for the Champlain Hudson Power Express, a…

Light Sunday

Traffic was light on the North River on Sunday after the Saturday rush. A trio of Reinauer ATBs occupied the anchorages at sunrise, while several tugs with barges were also anchored off Yonkers. Warming temperatures made it a good opportunity to try out the newly reopened North Walkway over the GWB, which allows for a…

Weekend traffic

North River anchorages filled up Friday night as a weather system came through Saturday, generating a small craft warning for the Harbor and steady rain. Through traffic was fairly heavy, with product barges heading north, a sugar barge arriving for Yonkers, and a foreign-flagged tanker leaving town after a delivery in Albany.

Oil and sugar as the winter fades
Days continue to start chilly in mid-March and the River remains a source of cold, but by late Saturday the temperatures were climbing into the low 50s and flowers and trees are beginning to bloom. Traffic on the River was fairly light, and recreational boaters remain scarce as their boats are not yet in the…

Clearing up and clearing out

The North River anchorages cleared out Thursday as winds abated and temperatures climbed. The highlight of the day in terms of traffic was a foreign flagged tanker heading north for Albany, arriving from Europe and likely carrying a cargo of refined products, the first presumed European products cargo observed by NRN this year.

Anchoring heavy

The balmy February has continued into the Ides of the month, with temperatures climbing into the 60s midweek. The River has been busy, with two-way traffic and active anchorages. The year so far has been unusual in terms of weather, but also because of an increased number of tugs anchoring with what appear to be…

Winter gales

Temperatures plunged below freezing just before sunrise on Friday and fell below 20 F by sundown. Gale warnings were in effect for the harbor as the NOAA weather station at Robbins Reef lighthouse in the Upper Bay clocked gusts above 50 knots. With Upper Bay anchorages unappealing, a crowd of tanker barges took up residence…

Just visiting

The first full work week of December kicked off with clear skies, light winds and seasonable temperatures. The week brought two visitors to the passenger ship terminal area, with the Woods Hole-based 110’ Coast Guard cutter Tybee tieing up at the end of Pier 86 Monday morning for a one-day port call, and a brand…

Winter is here…sort of

The first day of astronomical winter is December 21, but the first day of meteorological winter is December 1 and it is beginning to feel a lot like winter this week. The skies cleared Thursday, but temperatures dropped. Winds remained elevated for the morning after Wednesday’s gale, with a small craft advisory in effect, before…

Over the rainbow, plus the fireboat mystery solved

Dawn on Monday brought a glorious rainbow to the River, arching from Weehawken up to North Bergen. A last line of rain showers came through at 7:20am, ending the effect, but it was great while it lasted. Activity on the River remained heavy. Adeline Marie remained at anchor on the River as she has been…

In transit

Helping to transit a J80 sailboat from Inwood to winter quarters in Verplanck provided a great opportunity to observe the Hudson north of the section known as the North River. We covered the 25 nautical miles in about 5.5 hours thanks to favorable southerly winds and a flood tide. Commercial traffic was light along the…

Send in the clouds

The string of perfect fall days came to an end on Sunday, with periodic rain and fog rolling in and lingering through Monday. The Dutch and Danish NATO frigates that had been sitting at Pier 88 headed back to sea Monday morning, perhaps to rejoin the brand new U.S. carrier Gerald Ford off Virginia Beach…
