Flying through April

The first few days of the new week have seen fairly light traffic during periods of NRN observation. Cement barges continue to be active. Early spring would typically be associated with a pick-up in construction activity consistent with this, though one might have thought the warm winter would dampen the seasonality somewhat. Temperatures continue to…

Going back for more sugar

Thursday brought typical ATB and tanker barge traffic, as well as the departure of the large sugar barge Knot Refined heading back to Florida. Temperatures climbed sharply and a layer of haze covered the North River for most of the day before burning off in late afternoon.

Tuesday traffic

After a slow start to the month, Tuesday brought some notable traffic to the North River, including some overseas cargos heading upstate on foreign flagged vessels. Pier 88 was also busy as the city’s Economic Development Corporation assembled some working boats from the Harbor for what seemed to be a career day for local students.…

Light Sunday

Traffic was light on the North River on Sunday after the Saturday rush. A trio of Reinauer ATBs occupied the anchorages at sunrise, while several tugs with barges were also anchored off Yonkers. Warming temperatures made it a good opportunity to try out the newly reopened North Walkway over the GWB, which allows for a…

Clearing up and clearing out

The North River anchorages cleared out Thursday as winds abated and temperatures climbed. The highlight of the day in terms of traffic was a foreign flagged tanker heading north for Albany, arriving from Europe and likely carrying a cargo of refined products, the first presumed European products cargo observed by NRN this year.

Special delivery

Thursday brought clear skies with temperatures in the 30s and 15 knot winds out of the southwest. Conditions are set to deteriorate as we move into the weekend, with temperatures dropping sharply. Small craft warning was in effect for the Harbor Thursday, and a gale warning goes into effect Friday. On the River, tanker cargos…

Presidential visit

Winter made an attempt on Tuesday, with temperatures dropping back into the 30s and snow flurries in evidence in the morning, though not with any accumulation. River traffic seemed strangely light, with a pair of tug/barge combinations at anchor in the morning and no cargos observed on the move. President Biden was in town, visiting…

Sleepy Sunday

Weirdly warm temperatures persisted Sunday, and the city looks on track to set a new record of winter days without snow tomorrow. Winds started light but were gusting above 20 knots at Robbins Reef by the end of the day. Commercial traffic seemed very light, and even recreational activity was scarce despite the warm conditions.…

After the wind

Skies cleared and winds moderated Friday, setting up favorable conditions for the weekend. As conditions improved, the crowd of tug/barge combinations anchored on the River dispersed and went back to work. Haggerty Girls pulled up their hook just after sundown on Thursday and B. Franklin Reinauer was on their way before sunrise on Friday. Stephen…

Weekend anchor

Thursday’s rains abated and temperatures climbed into the 40s by Saturday, warm enough for kayakers and for HRCS’s winter sailing crew. A number of tugs with empty tanker barges accumulated in the River by Friday evening. Reinauer’s Kristy Ann also remained with her apparently loaded barge from Thursday into Saturday morning, and then departed to…

Familiar faces

Clear and cold remained the watch words on Wednesday, with temperatures holding in the 30s. River traffic was steady but largely familiar vessels, many already seen at least once this year.

On official business

Tuesday brought clear skies, light winds, and chilly ttemperatures, with the mercury barely breaking 40. Traffic on and above the River was dominated by government boats and aircraft, though not for any particular obvious or coordinated reason. The Coast Guard had some Cape Cod based aircraft in the area, and also had its big icebreaking…

Hazards to navigation

Damp and fog continues to linger over New York City as temperatures remain unseasonably warm. Storms up north appear to have produced a lot of debris in the River, the larger pieces of which the Army Corps of Engineers has been busy cleaning up. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard’s ice breakers are less busy, though the…

Coastal flooding and plunging temperatures

High tide brought serious coastal flooding to New York Harbor Friday morning, with reports indicating neighborhoods on Jamaica Bay seeing their worst inundations since Sandy. Impact on the Hudson was much less dramatic, though high tide was still visibly above normal and some areas of Riverside Park South and Hudson River Park saw water where…

Storm arrives
Small craft advisory was in effect this afternoon as a big storm system moves through and a gale warning kicks in tonight as winds build. By 5pm, winds were gusting up to 20 MPH out of the northeast. Traffic was moderate ahead of the storm and a couple of tugs have sought the sheltered anchorages…

Another soaker

Tuesday brought another day of soaking rains, with temperatures in the 40s and light winds, swinging around from northerly to southerly. The brand new MSC cruise ship Seascape remained at Pier 88 for a second day and will remain at least through Wednesday evening for a scheduled naming ceremony here. MSC is also celebrating commencement…

A soaker

Temperatures climbed Saturday but a soaking rain for most of the day and 15 knot southwest wind did not make for great vibes. Commercial traffic remained fairly typical, with a Royal Wagenborg wood pulp freighter heading for Albany the most notable ship of the day. A Coast Guard 29’ boat came up the River from…

Small Craft Advisory
Clear and cold again Sunday, with temperatures just above freezing and stiff winds gusting over 20 knots out of the west. A small craft advisory was in effect for New York Harbor. Wind was visible on the River but conditions did not look choppy, at least not from shore. Chop seems to be worse on…

First Freeze

Temperatures fell below freezing early Saturday, the first freeze in New York City this year, but clear skies allowed us to get back to 40 by the afternoon, and the River remains a source of warmth for the time being as well. The North River anchorages remain in demand, with Kimberly Poling remaining off 72nd…

Variable weekend
Friday’s tropical storm cleared out Saturday but left behind balmy conditions. Twenty-four hours later, the mercury was dropping and winds were increasing as more rain came through. Oil product tanker barges remain on the move, transporting heating oil, gasoline, and diesel upstate and coming back empty, though Reinauer ATBs that anchored during Friday’s storm remained…
