Back in the fog
The wind swung around to the northeast Thursday and brought in wet weather and more fog, not ideal conditions for river traffic and even less ideal for photographing river traffic. The DEP’s Red Hook sludge tanker came through early, servicing the North River sewage plant and ferrying residual solids to the Hunts Point plant for…

Drill Baby Drill
Wednesday brought sunny skies but temperatures only in the 40s and persistently brisk winds. For most of the morning, a quartet of Coast Guard 29’ response boats was conducting drills in the river. Two of the boats had their machine guns mounted and manned in the bow. The Dean Reinauer headed up the river for…

Landing craft find new purpose
Two repurposed landing craft passed through the North River today, apparently having found new missions in the marine construction industry. The first was under its own power and had no visible markings on the bow and was not reporting information on AIS so we cannot identify it. It appeared to be an old landing craft…

Busy and breezy
The bulker Peristil came down the river just before sundown on Sunday evening, riding high with her rudder visible after having unloaded a cargo in Albany. Before Albany, Peristil had loaded in northern Chile, making it likely that road salt was what she brought with her. The Peristil anchored in the harbor overnight and was…

Importing cement
A short trip away from the North River found the Panama-flagged NACC New Yorker unloading cement at the McInnis Cement depot in Oak Point in the Bronx, on the northeastern end of the East River before it becomes Long Island Sound. McInnis manufactures cement at a plant on the end of the Gaspe Peninsula in…

Burning off the fog
Saturday morning started out in dense fog once again, but the haze had burned off by late morning, giving way to a sunny and warm afternoon. Air temperatures rose into the 60s, but the water remains cold in the mid 40s range. The tugboat Frances headed upstate with an empty scow. According to tugboatinfo.com http://www.tug44.org/tugboats.trawlers/tug-frances/…

Later daylight
Daylight savings time means more opportunity to observe traffic late in the day on the river. Tuesday saw Buchanan12 pushing a float of empty hoppers at slack tide heading back up to the Tilcon quarry at Clinton Point. In the photo, the FDNY’s 27’ Marine 1a small boat passes heading downriver towards its Chelsea headquarters.…

Back to the 80s
Away from the river for a bit so its time for a throwback to the late 1980s. Here the old Cunard QE2 leaves Pier 88 with some help from Margaret Moran. Built in the 1960s, this version of the QE2 had the lines more of an old ocean liner than a modern cruise ship. She…

Drying out
Clearer skies and warmer weather arrived Thursday, and so did Norwegian Gem, returning from the Caribbean. A Vane Brothers tug arrived with a fuel barge for bunkering, and then the Gem was on her way again by sundown, heading back towards San Juan. The tugboat Frances came through from Albany, heading for Tottenville. Mackenzie Rose…

Windy and clear
Windy conditions persisted Tuesday, and a number of tugs with empty barges were laid up in North River anchorages in the morning before heading out in the afternoon. Mister Jim came through with an empty hopper on the way down from Coeymans, passing an anchored Rubia and a Vane Brothers tug pushing upriver with a…

Bulking up
Sunday morning brought rain, warm temperatures and the first bulker we have seen on the river for a while, with the Nordic Skagen coming through heading for the Port of Coeymans, perhaps picking up scrap metal up there. Mister Jim was also heading back to Coeymans with a group of gondola barges lashed together. A…

Sweet
A bargeload of sugar arrived from Florida Saturday morning, heading for the Yonkers Domino plant with Dann Marine pushing and a second tug following to help docking. Sugar for the Yonkers plant originating in US ports is transported by US-flagged tugs and barges, whereas sugar coming from Mexico, Central America and Caribbean ports arrives in…

Friday arrives
Kristy Ann and Ruth Reinauer end the week at the anchorages in the North River, with the Dean Reinauer also sitting north of the bridge. But the Coast Guard icebreaker Sturgeon Bay, which anchored Thursday night off 72nd Street, got underway at daybreak, travelled up the river to the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, and now has returned…

Keeping busy
There was a lot of Reinauer activity this morning, with Kristy Ann and Curtis dropping anchor with empty barges after completing runs up to Boston and Bridgeport and Ruth arriving later in the morning. By end of day, Curtis had already headed back to the Arthur Kill to pick up a new cargo. Donjon Marine…

Heavy lift
Donjon Marine tugs came down the river this morning heading for Port of Elizabeth with an interesting cargo—a massive crane on a barge, lashed to another barge with a large generator, with one tug pulling and another pushing the combination. According to the Port of Albany’s Twitter feed ( https://twitter.com/portofalbany/status/1498696319648546821?s=21 ), the 785,000 pound GE…

Coming in like a…lamb
March came in quietly, both in terms of mild weather and light activity on the river. We did see one kayaker venturing out in the afternoon. Dean Reinauer came through with a barge loaded in Cateret, with AIS indicating a destination of Newburgh. The anchorages are empty with the usual exception of Teresa, who continues…

Breezy Sunday
The day opened with Curtis Reinauer and the Teresa still at anchor, but the Curtis weighed anchor and headed for Cateret for a new cargo. She was replaced by the Cape Canaveral which returned to the anchorage it left a few days ago. Cruise ship Nordic Getaway arrived early, returning from its Bahamas cruise, but…

Swinging with the tide
Light traffic on the river on Saturday, with two tug and barge combinations sitting at anchor: the Teresa, which has been here at least 3 weeks now, and the Curtis Reinauer which sits about a mile further north. In the photo below, the ebb tide is slacking in the afternoon and the anchored vessels are…

Clearing skies
Friday opened with icy rain and fog, not great for shipping and definitely not great for photographing shipping. Cape Canaveral weighed anchor after dark on Thursday, collected a cargo in Lindin, and then anchored off Staten Island. She was replaced by Curtis Reinauer which anchored up by 125th Street, about a mile north of the…
