Friday night light

ATBs awaiting new cargos accumulated at the North River anchorages Friday heading into a hot weekend. Patrice McAllister arrived Thursday night and anchored off 96th Street. She was joined by Adeline Marie, anchoring about a mile south Friday morning and then by Dean Reinauer dropping its hook off the 125th Street pier in the afternoon.…

Mid-week traffic

Mid-week brought warm temperatures and passing rain storms. River traffic was fairly typical with some notable exceptions. Centerline Logistic’s Barry Silverton brought a barge up from Freeport, Texas, heading for the Sunoco Hudson Terminal in Rensselaer, an usual move as most refined product cargos heading up the river are loaded in New Jersey rather than…

Heating up again

Temperatures have continued to climb after the mild weekend and winds were light on Tuesday. Observed commercial traffic was fairly typical, with stone moving south and refined oil products moving north.

Continuing a good run

Beautiful weekend conditions continued into Monday, with clear skies, pleasant temperatures and winds building from the southeast. River traffic was fairly moderate. Carnival Magic was in town, loading passengers for an afternoon departure for Bermuda, and Royal Wagenborg’s Virginiaborg passed through after unloading wood pulp in Albany.

Moving Product

The spell of perfect weather came to an end Thursday, with temperatures rising again, though thankfully winds continued to blow steadily from the south. The second half of the week also has brought some interesting tanker traffic. Wednesday evening saw a Marshall Islands flagged tanker, The Amigo, coming down the river after having likely brought…

Summer research

Another very pleasant day, with southerly winds building into afternoon and setting up some good sailing. Commercial traffic on the River seemed rather light after yesterday’s flood of hoppers and empty tanker ATBs, though by the end of the day there were a number of loaded tankers heading north. Kirby Corp’s tug Mako remains anchored…

Summer squalls

Lines of thunderstorms moved through the area throughout the day, starting first thing and then recurring at midday and in the afternoon. The sun broke through periodically but humidity remained high. The Haggerty Girls was (were?) anchored in the River in the morning, but headed down to the Upper Bay in the afternoon and was…

Summer weekends

As we move into mid-summer, the days start to run together. Heat, interrupted by occasional storms, and winds from the southeast building as the heat builds up through the day making for excellent afternoon and evening sailing. River traffic continues as usual, and boaters, sailors, paddle boarders and even swimmers are out in force.

Tame Tuesday

Tuesday brought another day of benign weather and northerly winds. Commercial traffic was light and routine, dominated by Reinauer ATBs, while sailers were enjoying the conditions.

The barge in your backyard
For some time I have been wanting to write an explainer article for my neighbors about the barges and tugs we see anchored along the Hudson every day. Thousands of people observe these vessels daily but most have very little idea what they are and what they do. Thanks to the West Side Rag, an…

Keeping busy
There was a lot of Reinauer activity this morning, with Kristy Ann and Curtis dropping anchor with empty barges after completing runs up to Boston and Bridgeport and Ruth arriving later in the morning. By end of day, Curtis had already headed back to the Arthur Kill to pick up a new cargo. Donjon Marine…

Warmer Wednesday
Weather related backlogs seem to be clearing and traffic was quieter Wednesday. Reinauer Transportation kept its Articulated Tug/Barge (ATB) crews busy. ATBs are a married pair of a tug and a barge with a mechanical connection which means they do not have to be lashed together with lines as in more traditional setups. Reinauer’s Nicole…
